Moving on to Silverlight...

As much fun as it has been to code almost exlusively in ASP.NET with jQuery, I'm moving on to Silverlight 4.  I've actually be working almost exclusively in Silverlight for the past 2 - 3 months, and I love it!  We are using the MVVM design pattern with Prism.  MVVM and Prism (or another IOC) with Silverlight/WPF are an absolute must for complex business apps.  I don't think I have ever absorbed new technology like I have with Silverlight.  Delicious.

Anyways, my next several posts will be focusing on Silverlight, with many MVVM-focused posts, and some other stuff as they come (learning and mastering SQL is a lifelong process apparently...) like:

At work, we noticed a considerable performance hit using a T-SQL implementation of the Levenshtein algorithm created by Michael Gilleland found here . It seems to me that his approach was to replicate the C-code algorithm found in Wikipedia in T-SQL rather than taking a step back and re-conceptualizing the algorithm from a T-SQL standpoint. Feel free to correct me, but it see ms that the algorithm focues on three things to find the shortest distance between two strings (what it takes to make them the same): How many character insertions are necessary How many character deletions are necessary How many character substitutions are necessary These three traits are necessary to accommodate mis-aligned strings because of typos. If the algorithm is not designed with these constraints, one missing letter will result in inaccurate reporting because it throws the indexing off. The hidden workings of __doPostBack - Full or Partial Postback?

In experimenting with how I could manually create a partial postback, I ran into some odd behavior.  I was using the old '__doPostBack('target', 'argument')' javascript call to perform the post back and that was all well and good, but I noticed that my page was doing a full post back instead of a partial each time. After digging around for a bit (where would software development be w/o Google search?), I found this tidbit here (I'm always grateful when others have spent a few hours finding little programming nuggets to share - less time searching for me): __doPostBack starts by trying to retrieve an element in the client DOM with the corresponding ClientID to the UniqueID you pass as the first argument to __doPostBack. Facing Death...dum de dum dum

Death is such an ugly topic, no matter who you are.  It's depressing, messy, convoluted, and affects everyone, if they're honest about it, in some deeply personal way.  Thing is, I used to think the idea of my own death didn't affect me.  Contemplating my own death was like contemplating some other major life event, but it did not inspire any deep emotional reaction.  I guess I always hoped and kind of presumed that my death, when it happened, would mean something.  That somehow it would give back to the world something it would have otherwise lost, and would therefore make my death 'ok', or at least would come in a time and way that was acceptable to me. Except that facing death now strips me of all those illusions.  If I die of cancer (I have stage IV lung cancer), then it will render my death somewhat...well... meaningless.  Sure, maybe some insights or something I've learned while contemplating death by cancer will help someone in some vague way, but is th
